Get to know sisters Azizeh and Mitra, the creative duo behind Banana Blossom Forestway!

What inspired you to open a Banana Blossom franchise?

What inspired us to open a Banana Blossom franchise was a desire to bring something genuinely fresh, healthy, and nourishing to our community. We wanted a place where people could enjoy vibrant, wholesome meals without the compromise of additives or heavily processed ingredients. Banana Blossom salads are made with real, quality ingredients.

Why did you pick Forestway?

We chose Forestway because it felt like the perfect fit for what we wanted to bring to the community. The area has a wonderful mix of families, professionals, and people who are health-conscious and appreciate fresh, quality food. Being in Forestway Shopping Centre allows us to reach a vibrant, diverse group of people who are looking for convenient, nourishing options.

What were you up to before joining the Banana Blossom family?

Before joining the Banana Blossom family, my sister and I both had creative careers that shaped who we are today. I (Azizeh) worked in interior design with a background in architecture, while my sister Mitra was a professional photographer for many years, having studied art and photography. Both of us have always had a passion for creating and bringing beauty to life, each in our own unique way. With our combined backgrounds in design, art, and photography, opening a Banana Blossom franchise felt like a perfect way to bring our creativity to a new medium, offering fresh, healthy options to our community in a welcoming, vibrant space.

What’s your ultimate go-to Banana Blossom meal?

My ultimate go-to Banana Blossom meals are the Tokyo Classic, Satay bowl, and Soho. The Tokyo Classic offers that perfect fusion of fresh greens and unique Asian flavours that’s truly irresistible. The Satay bowl brings a warm, comforting taste, packed with rich, nourishing ingredients. And the Soho is another favourite, with vibrant, fresh flavours that feel like a burst of energy in every bite. These are my top choices that I just can’t get enough of!

What’s the dynamic like between you two as sisters and business partners at Banana Blossom?

Our dynamic as sisters and business partners is built on trust, support, and a shared vision for Banana Blossom. We complement each other well, balancing our strengths to create a positive and productive work environment.

For fun, what’s a surprising fact about each of you?

For fun, here are some surprising facts about us! I (Azizeh) have a knack for painting, which I’ve enjoyed on and off throughout my life. It’s a way for me to express my creativity outside of design, and I love experimenting with different styles and mediums. As for my sister (Mitra), she has a talent for capturing stunning portrait photographs. Her eye for detail and ability to bring out the essence of her subjects make her photography truly captivating. These creative hobbies reflect our artistic spirits and add a fun, personal touch to our lives beyond Banana Blossom!

What do you love most about running a Banana Blossom franchise?

We love greeting both new and familiar faces who quickly become our loyal regulars. It’s amazing to provide Bondi locals and visitors with fresh, healthy salads and bowls. Creating a welcoming, vibrant atmosphere where everyone feels comfortable, whether dining in or taking away, is so rewarding for us, our staff, and the community.

How has the Bondi Beach community reacted to your opening?

The community has really embraced us! Locals love the new bright and airy fit-out, and both newcomers and long-time Banana Blossom fans are thrilled we’re back, especially since we’re now open for dinner. The excitement has been contagious, and we’re well on our way to building an epic following here in Bondi.

How do you balance work and personal life as franchise owners?

It’s definitely a balancing act! With the store reopening, there have been lots of moving parts to manage — planning, logistics, and plenty of hard work. Tim left his corporate job to dive into Banana Blossom full-time, while Emma still works full-time in tech sales and helps out on weekends and with admin. We make it a priority to start our mornings with a walk and coffee with our dog, before jumping into our busy day.

What makes Banana Blossom stand out from other spots in Bondi?

There are so many things! For starters, we’re dog-friendly, and our sauces are irresistible, catering to every palate. Whether you’re vegan, vegetarian, or flexitarian, we’ve got something for everyone. Plus, our Bondi location perfectly complements the local lifestyle — come try it for yourself!

What’s your vision for Banana Blossom Bondi Beach?

We want to be the go-to spot for summer lunches, arvo hangs, and dinner, serving up the best salads and rice bowls. Growing our loyal customer base is key, and we’re excited to partner with local gyms, businesses, surf clubs, and sporting events in Bondi. We also want to host monthly summer events with food, music, and good vibes to bring the community together.

What did you do before joining Banana Blossom?

Tim worked as a property valuer with a background in construction, based in Barangaroo. Emma is still working full-time in FinTech as a Senior Consultant.

What made you decide to become franchisees with Banana Blossom?

Tim’s love for food and cooking, paired with his entrepreneurial spirit, made it the perfect opportunity to dive into the franchise world. For Emma, during Covid, she would religiously order Banana Blossom salads every Monday and Friday while working from home, which sparked a deep love for the brand. Fast forward to 2024, and here we are!

What’s your favourite Banana Blossom meal?

Hands down, the Tokyo Classic with chicken and a spicy shallot mix. It’s a simple dish, but the sauce is truly the best ever!

Lastly, what’s a fun fact people might not know about you two?

Tim is a true Bondi local, born and raised here, and has always dreamed of owning a business in the area. Emma grew up in Shellharbour by the sea, watching her parents run their own business, which inspired her to follow a similar path.

We had a quick chat with them to find out about their journey to becoming Banana Blossom franchisees!

What made you decide to become franchisees with Banana Blossom?

A&S: We started doing some research into healthy Asian salad options and discovered Banana Blossom on Facebook. We sampled some of their salads at the Macquarie store, and were very impressed, immediately falling in love with the brand!

After that, we then made an enquiry, and had a very supportive response from the Banana Blossom franchise team… and then we went from there!

What’s your vision for Banana Blossom Canberra?

A&S: We want everyone in Canberra to know about Banana Blossom, and when they think of salads, they think of us! We’re very passionate about promoting a happy, healthy lifestyle among Canberrans, and want to make greens and healthy eating more accessible and enjoyable for everyone.

Can you describe your experience with the initial onboarding process and the support provided by our franchise team?

A&S: Very supportive! The Banana Blossom franchisee team gave us all of the information we needed, and then the support they gave to get everything done was incredible. There are many franchise businesses out there, and the way they do things can be very different. In our experience, Banana Blossom has been very helpful and we feel like we’re all on the same boat – you never feel like you’re on your own with Banana Blossom, and there is a great sense of togetherness.

What advice would you give to someone considering becoming a franchisee with our company?

A&S: First, fall in love with the product. When you believe in the product you’re selling, that will keep you motivated and fuel your passion.

And with Banana Blossom salads, loving the product is the easy part. Then just get in contact with the franchisee team and know you’re in good hands!

What do you think the main benefits of being a franchisee over starting a business (from scratch) is?

A&S: The food is one thing, but people do look at branding and it’s very important that there is a good name, and a good brand. And, as the brand grows, so does our business.

Lastly, what’s your favourite Banana Blossom meal?

Shevonne: This is the most difficult question – I have to say everything! But my first love and first choice is Tokyo Classic.

Angie: Black Magic! I really like the salads  –  they’re all delicious in their own way.

We’re letting you in on a secret…

Here at Banana Blossom, we’re famous for our top-secret sauces – only four people in the whole world know our secret recipes.

… But there’s one recipe we’re letting out of the bag: Our co-founder, Ben, is sharing the recipe to his homemade Sriracha so you can cook up your very own batch at home!

Homemade Sriracha Recipe:

What you’ll need:

• 25 grams small dried chillies.
• 2 kg large fresh red chillies
• 250 grams peeled garlic
• 50 grams fresh bullet chillies
• 1/4 cup sea salt
• 1/2 cup vinegar
• 1.5L water
• 500 grams white sugar
• 200 ml rice vinegar
• Sea salt, to taste

How to make Sriracha:

1. Toast your Chillies
   • Toast the small dried chillies in a dry pan until fragrant.
2. Cook the Chilli Sauce Base
   • In a large pot, combine your toasted chillies with the large fresh red chillies, peeled garlic, fresh bullet chillies, sea salt, vinegar, and water.
   • Bring the mixture to a boil until the chillies are soft, then remove the liquid. Keep 250ml of the cooking liquid to add to sauce at the final stage.
3. Blend in a food processor until smooth
4. Final cooking stage
   • Return the blended mixture to the pot.
   • Add the white sugar, rice vinegar, and reserved cooking liquid.
   • Season with additional sea salt, if desired.
   • Simmer the mixture until it reaches the desired thickness.
5. Enjoy!
   Store the chilli sauce in airtight containers in the refrigerator for longer shelf life.
